Machine Operator (Alltra Burn Table)

Basic Function

Run CNC/NC-controlled burning center; cut plate steel of various sizes with plasma or oxy-fuel torches.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1.    Run CNC/NC programs as instructed by department supervisor or leadman.

2.    Request materials from Yard crew as needed for jobs, and manage remnants.

3.    Read work orders and bills of material to identify materials needed for each job.

4.    Load materials on torch table as needed.

5.    Remove cut material, scrap, drop-off material from torch bed, and mark parts with part numbers.

6.    Operate a hand-held torch and grinder to debur cut parts, if necessary.

7.    Place parts in rack or on pallets as required.

8.    Maintain equipment; perform day’s maintenance of equipment.

9.    Perform steel cycle count monthly.

10.    May require unloading steel trucks with overhead hoist and complete necessary paperwork.

11.    Job requires using a computer mouse to access and open/close computer documents.

12.    All duties are performed in compliance with Company policies relating to safety and housekeeping.

 

 

Education and Experience

1.    High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.

2.    Welding training and/or experience required.

3.    Relevant trade school or college course work desired.

4.    Blueprint reading skills desired.

5.    Heavy equipment manufacturing experience desired.

6.    Computer experience desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse, and locate and open/close files.

 

 

Essential Qualifications

1.    Perform work standing on concrete up to 12 hours per day, and up to 6 days per week.

2.    Flexibility to work additional hours beyond core work schedule when needed.

3.    Climb onto and work from torch table.  Must be able to work in various positions including squatting, bending, and reaching. 

4.    Primary work assignment will require employees to be able to frequently push/pull/lift up to 45 pounds.  Employees may occasionally push/pull/lift greater than 45 pounds if they are physically able to safely do it.  Employees are encouraged to use caution at all times when pushing/pulling/lifting.  Please consider the size, shape, weight of the object to be pushed/pulled/lifted, the path and the distance you must travel along with your own physical ability.  If necessary, please seek assistance with pushing/pulling/lifting tasks.  Employees should never lift more than they are physically able to do.

5.    Ability to run overhead hoists and forklift.

6.    Ability to work in heavy industrial environment with congestion and smoke.

7.    Ability to read a ruler and blueprints, and comprehend blueprint measurements and symbols to cut parts to match blueprint.

8.    Ability to follow verbal instruction and learn how to operate machine, training will be provided.  Be able to read, understand, and edit 2-axis NC code.

9.    Must have good written and oral communication skills.

10.    Must have good troubleshooting skills, be able to maintain quality, and diagnose cutting problems.

11.    Computer experience desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse, and locate and open/close files.

12.    Perform work standing on concrete up to 12 hours per day, and up to 6 days per week.

13.    Must be dependable, dedicated to getting the job done correctly, and use time wisely.

14.    Ability to read and comprehend a tape measure.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

15.    Adept at problem-solving.  Adaptable to new situations and challenges.  Open to changes and new ideas.

16.    Ability to satisfactorily work alone, and willingness to work with others in a team environment, with reasonable instructions, training, and supervision.  Can handle the stress that accompanies deadlines.

17.    Ability to communicate, express needs, and ask questions.

18.    Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed and uninvolved written or oral instructions.

19.    Ability to work in various physical positions including standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching (temporary variances may be accommodated based on employee’s primary assignment).

20.    Perform work in heavy industrial setting with exposure to heat, cold, and humidity, industrial odors, fumes, gasses, chemicals, oil, grease, smoke, dust, noise, and vibration, and could involve climbing ladders and stairs, using pneumatic tools, working in cramped quarters, and working with moving machinery.

21.    Ability to use a variety of hand tools and devices, including a welding gun, air tools, and grinders.

22.    Ability to wear the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth), and welding apron/chaps.  A respirator may also be required.
