Author Visit: Joan and Lisa Mueller -...
Description
The Yankton Community Library will be hosting Joan and Lisa Mueller, authors of the books Katy: The Little Rose from Ukraine and Katy of Rose Valley: A New Beginning. These books are inspired by their family history of immigration from Ukraine. Follow little Katy along with her family as they travel with this first group of Mennonite families on wagons and trains across Russia, Austria, Germany and England. Then climb aboard the steamship S.S. City of Richmond as they battle the Atlantic Ocean and eventually land in Castle Garden, New York. Finally, experience their train trip from New York to the Dakota Territory in their quest to find a new home in America.
Their visit on Thursday, October 9th will include two sessions; the first session at 3:45 pm is geared toward youth in grades K-5 and the second session at 6 pm is geared toward teens and adults. Both sessions will include photographs from the authors’ research and a question and answer period. Books will be available for purchase at both sessions; book 1 will be $15 and book 2 will be $18 or both books can be purchased together for $30.
At 3:45pm kids and their parents can come and learn about the many adventures of Katy and her cousins throughout the many weeks of travel. This session will include a reading of some selections from the book, veiwing pictures of wildlife, plants and climate native to Ukraine as well as interactive quizzes and discussions.
The evening session at 6 pm will include discussion about the Mennonite immigration story from Ukraine all the way to the Dakota Territory. Learn about the research and unique stories of these Mennonite immigrants as they traveled across Europe and the Atlantic Ocean and finally from New York to the Dakota Territory in 1874.
