Description
After Rebecca Clarren’s great-great-grandparents fled antisemitism in Russia, they arrived in the United States with their six children at the turn of the 20th century and settled on a homestead in South Dakota. In The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance, Clarren melds investigative reporting with personal family history to reveal the intertwined stories of her immigrant family and the Lakota people, and the continuing cycle of loss of Indigenous land, culture, and resources.
Join us at the library on Monday, June 2 at 6:30 PM for a discussion about The Cost of Free Land led by Dr. Jamie Sullivan. Limited copies of Clarren’s book are available for checkout at the library and through the Libby App!
Since 2003, the South Dakota Humanities Council’s One Book South Dakota program has encouraged people across the state to read and discuss the same book throughout the year. The author visit and the book discussion are funded by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
If you need additional accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the library.
