The Mead Museum is hiring a part-time (20 hours per week) Education & Interpretive Program Coordinator. This individual would be responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating education, docent, and interpretative programs. This position requires administrative tasks in scheduling, communication, program assessment and planning, and some clerical duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Develop, schedule and conduct programs, classes, workshops and other presentations for youth, teachers, and adult groups. • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate volunteers and docents, including Living History Program volunteers. Maintain databases and create monthly report of programs and attendance to a Board of Directors. • Conduct outreach programs. • Plan and develop educational materials including curriculum, teacher packets, and classroom kits. • Assist in the coordination of select programs and projects. • Coordinate with other museum staff as necessary for the smooth implementation of all programs, activities and meetings. • Maintain interactive areas of the museum and work with curatorial staff for interpretation of galleries. • Assist with special events and fund raising activities. • Represent the overall mission, goals, and programs of the organization to a wide range of public and professional situations. ABILITY TO: • Perform comfortably in front of large and diverse audiences. • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and written. • Teach school children and lead school group tours. • Incorporate South Dakota Social Studies Core Requirements into educational and exhibit programs. • Organize and conduct programs sensitive to customer diversity in knowledge, education, and culture. • Establish and maintain effective (team player) working relationships with Museum employees and volunteers. • Lift and manipulate “props” and equipment necessary to conduct programs, demonstrations, etc. (able to lift up to 50 lbs) • Maintain effective working relationships with Board members, Yankton City and County entities, donors, community members, and teachers. • Work occasional evenings and weekends. • Operate a motor vehicle. • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Excellent communication and writing skills. • Strong organizational abilities with projects and people. • Experience in both formal and informal educational settings. • Knowledge and experience with volunteer management concepts and practices • Experience providing programs for different ages and learning styles. • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook calendar, and relevant software. EXPERIENCE: • Knowledge of South Dakota History with an emphasis on Dakota Territorial History preferred but not required. • Experience working with grade school through adult groups. EDUCATION • Associates Degree in education or history or experience in a related field of study.
